Travel to school

At St Martins' we are always looking at ways to reduce the environmental impact of journeys to school, and encourage as many families as possible to walk, cycle or scoot to school.

To prepare the children for safe travel to school, we hold:

· A Road Safety Magic Show for children in Early Years.

· Feet first Walking Training (road safety) for children in Year 3.

· Learn to Ride sessions for children who need it in Years 4 and 6 to enable them to participate in later Bikeability sessions.

· Bikeability (road safety cycle training - Level 1) in Year 4.

· Bikeability (road safety cycle training - Level 2) in year 6.

We encourage greener travel choices by taking part in Walk to School Week in May, International Walk to School Month in October and the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel in March.

These events, alongside assemblies and class discussions around walking also aim to inspire children about walking, wheeling and scooting to school.

Our gates are open from 8.30am for early drop-off, to help provide working parents time to walk children to school in the morning. Staff are waiting to welcome children into the hall from this time, and activities are available, so that parents can leave their children, knowing they are safe and have something to do.

We have plenty of covered cycle and scooter parking bays to allow children to scoot or cycle to school, and our parent shelter and waiting area provides parents with a place to sit while waiting for their children.

Responsible parking and anti-idling

Parents are strongly discouraged from driving to and from school as the roads around the site are congested. There are no parking facilities at the school.

For those families who need to drive to school, we aim to reduce the environmental and other impacts of these journeys.

Our early drop-off reduces congestion by staggering the times children arrive at school.

We respectfully ask parents to consider our neighbours and to park responsibly, not blocking driveways, and ensuring parked cars do not force pedestrians into the road.

We also ask parents to ensure engines are turned off while waiting to collect children. Exhaust fumes released while cars are left idling are bad for the environment, contribute towards climate change, and are also linked to asthma and other lung diseases in children.
